Starting a painting business can be a great way to make a good income. Depending on where you’re located, you may be surprised to discover how easy it is to compete with other painting businesses, especially during the busy summer season. If you’ve been thinking about offering residential or commercial painting services, here are a few things you need to do before you get started:

Choose a Name and Logo

Before you can successfully start up a business, you need to choose a name for yourself. You can make it clever and witty or simply use your last name. No matter what name you decide to use, check online to make sure it isn’t already registered to another business. If it’s not, register it as soon as possible and purchase the domain so no one else takes it. You should also create a logo for yourself as soon as you can. There are online tools that allow you to do this yourself or you can pay a small fee to have a professional create a logo for you.

File Your LLC Paperwork

An LLC is a limited liability company that decreases your personal risk when starting a business. Filing for an LLC is easier and requires less paperwork than other business types. You can file your paperwork pretty easily online or hire someone to do it for you, depending on your comfort level.

Purchase Equipment

Before you can paint a building, you need to have the right equipment. When you first start out, you’ll need things like drop cloths, paint brushes and rollers, sandpaper and paint buckets. As you expand and grow, you may want to invest in filling machines and equipmentto make your job easier and give you the ability to paint more projects.

In addition to all these things, you’ll also need to file for an EIN number and make sure you have adequate insurance coverage. Look at local laws governing businesses in your county and state to make sure your painting business is fully compliant.
